Description
This Absorbable Hemostatic Gelatin Sponge stops bleeding quickly and effectively, thereby reducing intra operative bleeding and surgery time. It is designed for use after dental procedures such as extractions, oral mass removal and other oral bone and soft tissue surgery where traditional haemostasis is difficult or impractical. The gelatin sponge absorbs approximately 40 to 50 times its weight of water/blood, adheres easily to the bleeding site and is fully absorbed within 3 to 4 weeks.
As soon as blood comes in contact with the porous structure of the sponge thrombocytes are activated to release a series of substances which promote their aggregation and their surface changes enabling them to act as a catalyst for fibrin formation.
Manufactured from highly purified first extract grade gelatin material, it is non-toxic, non-allergenic, non-immunogenic, non-pyrogenic and overall biocompatible. The sponge is gamma-sterilised, and therefore does not require re-sterilisation. It is supplied in convenient ready-to-tear sterile blisters. Unlike many haemostatic agents, it does not require special storage conditions.
HOW to use:
Sterile technique should always be used to remove the sterile sponge from its packaging. Apply sponge to the bleeding site and hold in place with moderate pressure for 1-2 minutes until haemostasis results. The first application will usually control bleeding, but if not, additional applications may be made. Use only the minimum amount necessary to produce hemostasis. When bleeding is controlled, the sponge can be left in situ and sutured over as it causes no more cellular reaction than the blood clot. For mucosal surfaces it may be left in place until it liquefies.
The sponge may be used as a delivery agent for other agents such as antibiotics eg Doxycycline, Clindamycin, Thrombin and Chemo therapeutics without reduction of the sponge’s haemostatic effect.
